Review Deep Dive

1. Cleaning Performance

Suction Power: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mopping Ability: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Edge Cleaning: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

While the suction power is not the strongest on paper compared to high end models, it does a good job of picking up particles and keeping our floors clean.

Mopping ability is also top-notch, thanks to the use of two rotating mops. The self-clean function helps keep the mop fresh every 10-15 minutes.

Edge cleaning, more specifically corner cleaning, is its weak point. It’s physically unable to get to the corners like some of the newer models on the market.

What we liked:

  • Suction is sufficient to remove dirt on floorboards, carpet. and tiles in our house
  • The dual rotating mops are a significant upgrade from older models that just drag a wet rag across the floors.

What can be improved:

  • It doesn’t have the tools to reach into the corners of the house for cleaning like newer models.

Cleaning Performance Breakdown

In a Nutshell:
  • Suction Power: 5,500 Pa handles debris, pet hair, crumbs, and dust efficiently.
  • Mopping Performance: Upgraded mopping with rotating pads, but no cleaning agents allowed except Roborock’s own.
  • Edge Cleaning: Good, but corners need manual attention.

Suction Power ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Roborock Q Revo has a powerful 5,500 Pa suction, capable of handling different types of debris, including pet hair, crumbs, and dust.

Our Experience:
Over the past year, the Q Revo has performed exceptionally well on our timber floors, tiles, and carpets, handling everything seamlessly. On non-cleaning days, we can feel the dust building up on our feet!

While we don’t have pets, my wife’s hair gets picked up efficiently. Clumps of hair gather around the ends of the main brush each month, making it easy to remove during maintenance. The rubber brush prevents tangling, eliminating the need for a blade to cut through hair. What a relief!

Mopping Performance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo features two rotating mop pads that mop after vacuuming. The mop lifts when it detects carpet, and the docking station washes the mop pads at 10 or 15-minute intervals (set by you).

Our Experience:
The mopping capability is a massive upgrade from our old Roborock S50, which was equivalent to dragging a wet rag across your floor.

The mopping function works well on our hardwood floors, keeping on top of everyday dirt and spills. However, for tougher stains, you may need to run the unit several times.

Another minor drawback is that you can’t use any cleaning agent in the clean water tank (at the docking station) as it may damage the unit—unless it’s Roborock’s own Omo floor cleaning product. We haven’t used any cleaning product since we bought the unit and haven’t had any issues with the cleanliness of our floors, but it’s something to keep in mind if you like your floors smelling fresh.

Edge Cleaning ⭐⭐⭐⭐

While the Q Revo does well with edge cleaning, it falls short when it comes to the corners of the house.

Our Experience:
We noticed early on that the Q Revo’s wasn’t able to clean corners. Every so often, I walk the perimeters of the house to clean the skirting, and each time I do, I notice a build-up of dust in corners of the house.

It’s not a deal-breaker but it’s something to be aware of when searching for a unit that’s right for you.

Mapping Accuracy: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Obstacle Detection
: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Multi-floor Maps: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

LiDAR mapping technology is incredibly accurate, allowing it to quickly map your house.

The Q Revo detects and avoids obstacles like furniture and stairs with ease. However, it falls short in avoiding smaller objects like cables and toys.

You can store multiple maps for one device. This is useful if you have multiple storeys in your house, or parts of the house separated by steps.

What we liked:

  • First-time mapping of the house is quick and easy. The map is saved so you only need to do it once.
  • If you have multiple floors, you can set up multiple maps for the Q Revo to work with.

What can be improved:

  • Better obstacle avoidance. Picking up smaller objects and cables is a must before it cleans.

Navigation and Mapping Performance Breakdown

In a Nutshell:
  • Mapping Accuracy: LiDAR mapping technology creates detailed maps quickly and accurately
  • Obstacle Detection: Good at avoiding larger items but struggles with small objects like toys and cables.
  • Multi-Floor Navigation: Can map and clean multiple floors effectively but needs to be physically moved between floors.
Mapping Accuracy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo’s LiDAR mapping technology is incredibly accurate, allowing it to quickly learn and remember the layout of your home for future cleanings.

Our Experience:
The mapping feature was a big improvement from our past model. The Q Revo was able to accurately create a detailed map of our home and consistently followed the most efficient cleaning path, ensuring complete coverage.

The map on the app is where you command the robovac to do your bidding. From scheduling clean times to setting invisible boundaries in the house, the app can do it all.

Obstacle Detection ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Equipped with Reactive Tech, the Q Revo detects and avoids obstacles like furniture and stairs with ease. Where the unit does fall short is in avoiding small objects like toys and cables.

Our Experience:
The obstacle detection works well for larger items, providing a good cleaning experience overall. But it does fall short with small objects like children’s toys or cables, often getting its main brush jammed.

Multi-Floor Navigation⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo can handle multiple floors effortlessly. Simply move it to the desired floor, and it will map out the new area with the same precision as the first.

Our Experience:

We tested it in different areas of the house, and it adapted quickly, allowing multiple maps for the same house. The only downside is that you have to physically move it between floors if you have steps or stairs.

3. Ease of Use

Setup Process: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
App Interface
: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Voice Control: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

Setting up the unit is easy to do. Just unbox the unit and the docking station, then plug it in to charge. Meanwhile, you can download the Roborock app on your phone so you’re ready to go when it’s full.

The app may look a bit confusing when you first start it up, but it’s relatively easy to use once you get used to it. The screenshot on the right shows the settings you can choose for your cleaning session. You can change the suction power, water flow, and the number of times you want it to clean.

Cleaning can be initiated using your home assistant. It is a bit clunky to get it to work, and you can’t change the settings via voice command. But it can be useful when your hands are tied.

What we liked:

  • Installation of the app and setting up the device for the first time is quick and easy
  • App has a lot of visual aspects to help guide you. Its intuitive to use, but can be a bit overwhelming for first time users.

What can be improved:

  • Voice control functionality is there, but cleaning commands are limited.

Ease of Use Breakdown

In a Nutshell:
  • Setup Process: Easy and quick to set up, with a hassle-free process.
  • App Interface: User-friendly and intuitive, though initially overwhelming.
  • Voice Control: Supports Alexa and Google Assistant for convenient, hands-free control.
Setup Process ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Setting up the Q Revo is easy. Plug it in, download the app, and follow the instructions. You’ll have it up and running in no time. The first run after a full charge will be to map your house.

Our Experience:
The setup process was quick and hassle-free. We had the Q Revo loaded in its dock minutes after unboxing. The not-so-fun part was waiting for it to fully charge before it could start mapping our house. But this gives you time to familiarize yourself with the app, which is where you will be doing most of your interactions with the unit.

App Interface ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Roborock app is user-friendly. The first time you use it, you may get a bit overwhelmed with the number of options, but it becomes second nature quickly. Scheduling cleanings and customizing settings is easy once you get the hang of it. The app’s interface is intuitive and responsive.

Our Experience:
The app is a big improvement from what the original Roborock S50 model used (our first robovac). We could easily set cleaning schedules, customize settings, and check how long until each part of the unit needs to be changed.

Voice Control ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo supports Alexa and Google Assistant, making hands-free control convenient.

Our Experience:
Integrating the Q Revo with our smart home system was seamless (we use Google Home). Voice commands worked well, adding an extra layer of convenience. However, voice commands are more limited than manual controls via the app.

We can instruct Rocky (our robovac) to clean specific rooms named in the app, but can’t change the suction power or water usage as as you can through the app.

4. Ease of Maintenance

Docking Station: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Filter & Sensor
: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Brush & Mop Pads: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

Maintenance on the docking station involves cleaning out the docking pad where the robovac sits, as dirt can get trapped there (typically once a month), washing the dirty water tank, and changing out the dustbag every 6-8 months.

Cleaning the filter in the Q Revo is simple, as it can easily detach from the local dustbin. Sensors are also easily accessible to wipe down.

The main brush is easy to remove. Make sure to check the sides of the brush as hair gets pushed to these areas and builds up. I do a general clean once every month. Mop pads are easily removed and can be washed with other laundry.

What we liked:

  • Easy to maintain. I do a general clean once a month to make sure everything is in good order.
  • The main brush and mopping pads are easy to remove from the unit. Mopping pads are attached with Velcro to the mopping mounts. Mounts magnetically attach to the robovac.

What can be improved:

  • Not really a maintenance item, but I do wish the water tank was larger or had the ability to be piped in so I don’t need to dump and top up the water every two clean cycles.

Jump to the next criteria if you don’t need more info on this section (breakdown below)

Cleaning Performance | Navigation and Mapping | Ease of Use | Ease of Maintenance
Battery Life and Charging | Child Safety and Noise Levels | Price and Value

Ease of Maintenance Breakdown

In a Nutshell:
  • Docking Station Cleaning: Low maintenance with occasional cleaning of the docking pad and filter. Dustbin needs changing every 6-8 months.
  • Filter and Sensor Cleaning: Easy and infrequent, just ensure the filter dries for 24 hours after cleaning.
  • Brush and Mop Pads Cleaning: Straightforward maintenance; the main brush minimizes tangling, and mop pads are easy to detach and clean.
Docking Station Cleaning ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The docking station has few moving parts that need maintenance.

Just clean the docking pad and filter occasionally, as dirt buildup can prevent water from being drained or applied to the mop pads.

The dustbin needs to be changed every 6-8 months, so check it during routine maintenance.
There’s also the dirty water tank which you want to wash properly every day often..

Our Experience: The docking station basically runs itself with little maintenance. I do a general clean of it along with the robovac every month to make sure things are in good order. After a month of continued use, the mounting pad gets quite dirty and needs a good clean.

Our first dustbag lasted around 8-9 months before needing replacing. The official dust bags are pricey for what they are, so we use third-party dust bags that are almost a tenth of the price and found them to work perfectly fine. Here is a link to the ones we use.

Filter and Sensor Cleaning ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The filters are easy to clean and don’t need need frequent replacement, making this another low-maintenance aspect of the Q Revo. The filter simply pops out of the unit’s dustbin and clicks back in after you’re done.

Sensors around the robovac are also accessible for wiping down.

Our Experience:
Cleaning the filters and sensors is straightforward and doesn’t take much time. Just ensure the filter is dry for at least 24 hours before reinstalling it. Early on, I noticed dust clumps building up when I didn’t let it dry after washing.

Brush and Mop Pads Cleaning ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The main brush is designed to minimize tangling, and cleaning them is straightforward. A quick check and the occasional clean keeps it in good shape. The mopping pads attach using Velcro to the mopping unit, which itself is magnetic and attaches to the base of the robovac. This allows for quick detachment for maintenance and cleaning.

Our Experience:
The brush on our Q Revo never got tangled with hair and is easy to access and clean. Hair gets pushed to either end of the brush, so remember to clean these areas. While the mop pads are washed at the docking station after every clean, its a good idea to wash them with detergent every so often.

5. Battery Life and Charging

Battery Duration: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Recharge Time
: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Docking: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

At full charge, the battery lasts for 100-120 minutes of continued vacuuming and cleaning before it needs to go back to charge.

Approximately 4 hours to charge to 100%. But if it’s halfway through a clean and needs a top up, it will continue cleaning when it hits 80% charge.

The Q Revo hasn’t had any issues with finding its way back to its dock. This is really important as you don’t want to play hide and seek after each cleaning session.

What we liked:

  • Charging is not the fastest, but if you can clean your entire place in one session, you likely won’t need it again until the next day.
  • Very good at finding its dock, whether it’s running back to clean the mop every 15 minutes or at the end of a cleaning session.

What can be improved:

  • If the battery could last 10 minutes longer, we could clean the entire house in one session.

Jump to the next criteria if you don’t need more info on this section (breakdown below)

Cleaning Performance | Navigation and Mapping | Ease of Use | Ease of Maintenance
Battery Life and Charging | Child Safety and Noise Levels | Price and Value

Battery Life and Charging Breakdown

In a Nutshell:
  • Battery Duration: Runs for about 100-120 minutes per charge, though advertised for up to 3 hours.
  • Recharge Time: Takes about 4 hours to recharge; resumes cleaning at 80% charge.
  • Docking: Reliably returns to dock at 15% battery
Battery Duration ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo has a decent battery life. While it’s advertised to run for up to 3 hours, ours tends to fall short of this by a fair margin. Three hours is probably achievable if you run it on low settings.

Our Experience:
We get a good 100-120 minutes from each full charge, depending on the settings (standard to high suction levels). This is enough to vacuum and mop 100 square meters of our house before hitting 15% battery and needing to recharge.

I wish the battery would last 10 minutes longer so it can finish cleaning the small portion remaining.

Recharge Time ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Recharging takes about 4 hours. It’s not the fastest, but it’s reasonable. If it needs to recharge halfway through a clean, it goes back to the dock by itself. Once its battery levels hit 80%, it continues cleaning where it left off.

Our Experience:
The battery could be slightly better to clean the entire house in one go. As a workaround, we alternate rooms, cleaning them over two sessions.

Docking ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo reliably returns to its dock when the battery is low, ensuring it’s always ready for the next cleaning session. It returns to the dock at 15% regardless of how much of the house is left to clean.

Our Experience:
The auto-docking feature is reliable, and we never had to worry about finding the Q Revo with a dead battery (unless it tangled with cords). Unlike our old robovac, we haven’t experienced any charging difficulties or errors.

6. Child Safety and Noise Levels

Child Safety: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Operating Sound: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

Between the sensors and bumpers to detect obstacles and the low operating speeds of the unit, its very child friendly. However, I wouldn’t leave small babies unsupervised as their fingers may still get clipped.

The loudness of vacuum is largely dependent on the suction level you set it at. It’s very quiet at the lowest setting and gets louder at the maximum.
In saying that, we’ve had no issues with the noise during the loudest suction as its softer than our old stick Dyson.

The loudest sounds are at the end of a cleaning session, where the dock extracts the dust from the unit into the dustbag. Luckily this only lasts for 5-8 seconds.

What we liked:

  • Operating sounds at maximum suction is no louder than a conventional vacuum stick.
  • The mop drying process is very quiet, you can’t tell that its even running unless you put your ear right next to it.

What can be improved:

  • The dust extraction at the dock at the end of a cleaning session can get a bit loud, and can startle little kids. This lasts for about 5-8 seconds.

Jump to the next criteria if you don’t need more info on this section (breakdown below)

Child Safety and Noise Levels Breakdown

In a Nutshell:
  • Child Safety: Kid-friendly with sensors and bumpers, but supervise closely.
  • Babies: Small babies and infants may still get their fingers clipped.
  • Operating Sound: Quiet operation varies with suction settings; loudest when emptying dustbin.
Child Safety ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo is kid-friendly with sensors and bumpers to detect obstacles and low operating speeds to reduce risks.

Our Experience:
Personally I’m more worried about my children trampling over the robovac than I am of the reverse. On occasion, I would see the bot approach my 2 year old who is sitting there silently, waiting for it to approach him. Once close enough he would kick it, and this is often followed by a chuckle as the robovac changes its course.

I probably wouldn’t leave a baby on the floor unless you directly supervising. The robovac may still clip their small fingers.

Operating Sound ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Q Revo operates quietly, suitable for any time of the day. It’s quieter than our old Dyson V8+. Sound levels vary based on suction settings, from very quiet at the lowest to louder at Max+ suction.

Our Experience:
I leave the vacuum suction at the standard level during the week and have had no issues with the sound level. On weekends, it’s scheduled at max suction for a deeper clean, still without issues. However, if your child is a sensitive sleeper, you might want to avoid the highest setting.

Note that the loudest sounds occurs when the robovac empties its dustbin into the dock’s dustbag. The first time our kids heard it, they were startled.

7. Price and Value

Cost: ⭐⭐⭐
Value for Money
: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Key Takeaway

The Q Revo retails at $899.99, making it among the mid-high tier of robovacs. You can get cheaper models if you can forgo some features.

Since the robovac’s biggest selling point is saving you time, the proposition of value is different for each family. For us, we found the money we parted with was well worth the time saved. The robovac does a good job, not needing us to lift our fingers to do the cleaning around the house.

The Roborock Q Revo is priced at $899.99, placing it in the middle of the range for robot vacuums.

We initially hesitated at the price point, but after seeing its performance and the time it saves, we believe it’s worth every penny.
